Another happy accidental discovery. After my Julia Jacklin gig I spent the night listening to youtubes of hers and on the suggestions side was a video of Angel Olsen. The thumbnail looked interesting so I pressed play. The thumbnail is this one right here --> Wouldn't you press play? Did you? What did you think of it? I liked it and searched more of her. I was delighted to find out she would play in Nottingham in May. |

Purchased my ticket and a few days later it appeared the gig was sold out! The gig was originally scheduled for Rescue Rooms but I assume the demand was high so they transferred it to Rock City. Rock City and I have developed a weird relationship. I subconsciously / intentionally arrive late. I think I have associated it with screaming teens. Having said that, I did arrive late and I missed the supporting act.
I also missed Angel Olsen's first couple of songs. When I arrived the gig was in full bloom. The venue was packed and enjoying the gig. Audience was actually around my age, 30s and upwards. Skillful musicians and entertaining songs. I particularly enjoyed 'Shut up and kiss me' and 'Never be mine'. The second one has probably become my favorite of hers. |
In between songs Angel offered a bit of banter and a story. She said she was a new cat owner and wanted to show love to her but her cat didn't respond to it. She went on saying that someone told her that in order to be in the cat's good graces she shouldn't show her that she was thirsty. 'Don't show them that you're thirsty' she said and raised a glass of water and sipped 'There's to that' (or to that effect) she then said.
The night didn't last long, the gig was over by 10pm. The set list was the following:
Not gonna kill you
Never be mine
Shut up and kiss me
Those were the days
Never be mine
Hi-five
Windows
Before the night ended she introduced her band members. It was then that I noticed all were wearing a suit, men and women dressed the same. I liked that. They left the stage and shortly came back to close the gig. First Angel came on stage on her own and a few minutes later the whole band was on stage again. The gig ended with Windows.
If you ever get the opportunity to see Angel Olsen live don't pass. She is great and it appears wherever she goes she sells out - so be fast to secure a ticket! She has a new album out My Woman that you might want to check out. If you want to learn more about Angel Olsen here are her social media links: Website Facebook Twitter |
