My Gig Reviews

Daughter

Daughter was the first gig I went to in Nottingham. So when they said the doors would open at 6:30pm - I was on time! Big mistake! The support Pixx didn't come on the stage for at least an hour and a half later! I waited and I waited...and waited until the venue filled.

When it did fill up, I felt like a fish out of water - or should I say like a grown up at a teenage party! I felt oooold! The crowd was mostly students between the ages of 15 to 21. Thought to myself 'perhaps you are too old to be going to gigs'. Instinctively I looked around to see if I could spot any of my students. Thankfully I didn't.

Given I was there very early, I had a good spot almost front row. Daughter came on stage after the usual short break of setting up all the musical instruments. I must say they had really good music in the interlude. I wish I had recorded it to find out which band it was!

So finally Daughter enter the stage. The crowd went wild. The lead singer was very humble... or maybe best described as timid! She spoke so softly - I literally couldn't hear a word she said! The guitarist tried to be a little more chatty and audible between songs but overall it felt a bit disconnected from the crowd.

We were there to hear them sing and that we did. I wasn't much aware of Daughter other than their 'Youth' song. To be completely honest, the gig didn't hook me on any other song. The crowd did seem to know all lyrics of all songs and sang along. I personally thought all songs sounded similar. Unfortunately, this turned out not to be a band for moi. The crowd did enjoy the gig immensely  though so I guess they are doing great for their targeted audience.

And talking about the audience... I need to confess I spent the whole night with my face in my pint size soft drink plastic cup. For Pete's sake, please mind your fellow gig goers and hold your human gases in - I know you can! With so many people (the venue did feel overcrowded) and one as short as I, the air does not circulate...it gets trapped and you end up desperately trying to inhale the scent of your sugary soft drink!!!

This was one of the gigs that I felt I wanted to leave half way through but only stayed because I paid for it! As previously said, most of the crowd did seem to be into the songs and sang along but there was this particular girl that was laughing during the songs  - and her laughter was heard over the endings of each song. It did feel odd but then again I think if you ask her she will say it was the best gig of her life!

Pixx was supporting Daughter but she deserves a gig review of her own. I hadn't seen Daughter before so once Pixx set foot on the stage I wasn't sure if it was Daughter or not! She has very catchy songs. I don't remember not liking any of the songs she performed! She has a very intriguing voice and a 90's sense of style. She really reminded me of Dolores O'Riordan and the Cranberries. Maybe it is because I grew up with Cranberries that hit a cord of nostalgia. Who knows.

Apart from her songs, I was also impressed by how versatile her voice is and how skillful she is as a musician. In terms of engaging with the audience, the crowd really seemed to like her. They were very warm and seemed to enjoy the songs.

Hopefully we will see more of her in the future. I will certainly have my radar on to see her again. I will be delighted if I find out she is headlining on a tour.

Head over to youbute and hear some of her songs. Have a close look at the videos too, they are very artistic!
